Evangeline is a fictional tale based on the The Great Expulsion, the forced removal of 11,500 French settlers - Acadians, from what is now Canada. This was during the French-Indian war and was part of the British campaign against New France. In 1755 the first Acadians expelled were sent to the 13 Colonies by ship. Needless to say they were not treated well. For the complete story on the Historica Canada site click here. It is actually quite fascinating, make sure to find time to read more about it! I never thought to ask my Grandpa more about Evangeline or how we were related. Now as an adult, many times I've researched my family tree trying to find a connection with no luck. I have many ancestors from the states the Acadians were sent to, but none that seemed to have any connection to Canada, France, or the Acadians. Until today!
Today I finally broke through a brick wall to find the parents of Seth Lamony. His father Peter Le Moyne was born in Canada in the late 1700's. His name is definitely French and if I can find his grandparents, I might find some Acadians.
So to sum it all up, I got through one brick wall to now have 6 more; Peter's 2 parents & 4 grandparents. I do feel that I'm on the right path to finally solving the mystery of Evangeline. Wish me luck!
